Wheat Weavings
Marie started doing wheat weavings several years ago when she tried unsuccessfully to find one to give as a house warming gift for a friend. "I enjoy doing wheat weavings as a diversion from my other art forms." Wheat weaving is an art form with origins almost as old as wheat itself. It embodies the grain-related beliefs, rituals, and customs of many centuries and cultures. Traditional house blessings, like the Corizon (from corazon which means heart in Spanish) and the Welsh Fan below, were created to provide a home for the wheat 'spirit' after the harvest. When the wheat was harvested, some of the finest straws would be woven into an ornament and saved until the next planting in the safest place possible, the home. Eventually they came to be associated with the safety of the home itself. Click on the images below to see the larger image and details of size and price.
