Portfolio Three: Smooth as Silk
It was a relatively easy transition, when a number of years ago Marie started experimenting with painting dyes on silk. She draws a design with a resist which keeps the dyes from spreading out on the silk, and then paints with incredibly vibrant dyes using watercolor techniques that have become second-nature. Recently she has forged into new territories by quilting the design and then embellishing with embroidery, beads, and other appropriate materials. "In contrast to the speed and spontaneity of my paintings and drawings, teh completion of a silk painting can take up to a year." The results have been exciting and rewarding.
