Tennessee Watercolor Society
32nd Biennial Exhibition Chattanooga 2010
This is an exhibit of 70 paintings by 58 artists selected by George James, an internationally acclaimed professional artist and former professor of art at California State University at Fullerton, CA.  Marie's watercolor, "Fruit Salad" was juried into this show and received an award sponsored by the Signal Mountain Art Guild, one of eighteen awards selected by the juror.

"Fruit Salad" represents a convergence of a number of my favorite things.  Piles of oranges, apples, lemons and limes intrigue me at the local produce stands.  I've painted watercolors of produce on a number of occasions but  after I completed this particular watercolor I decided to take it an additional step and cut the painting into pieces (a scary thing to do!).  I'm not a quilter but I enjoy the color interplay in a well-crafted quilt.  So I rearranged my painting parts and stitched them together on a sewing machine with metallic thread.  The result is my paper quilt and since it i made of bits and pieces of painted fruit, I decided to call it "Fruit Salad."

Bon appetit!

Thirty pieces, including Fruit Salad," have been selected to travel to several venues througout the state:

July 1 - August 27               Customs House Museum, Clarksville

September 1 - October 27     West Tennessee Regional Art Center, Humboldt

November 1 - 30                  Pryor Gallery, Columbia State Community College, Columbia

The November-December 2006 issue of this popular regional magazine published profiles of some of the artists of the Blue Ridge mountains.  Marie Spaeder Haas is featured in the on-line edition of the magazine.  "With simple lines and soft color washes, this artist uses pen, paper, and paint to sketch creative homage to the mountain culture that holds such special meaning for her," says Jennifer Winslow, writer of the article.  To view the article in its entirety, click on the document below or click on http://www.blueridgecountry.com/arts/MarieSpaederHaas.cfm
