Blue Feathers Dancing in the Sun
This watercolor image comes from a powwow at Red Clay State Park and is one of a series of about a dozen Native American dancers in my portfolio. At powwows, Native American descendants from many tribes come together to dance, sing and tell stories. The dancers compete —in a gentle sort of way—by highly decorative costuming. That is what started me on the series. I wanted to challenge myself to do the varieties of texture I saw there–feathers, leather, metallic bells, ribbons, bone, and beads. This particular dancer has Aztec roots. The series has taken on a life of its own now.
